A Lifetime of Faith and Music: Britain’s Longest-Serving Church Organist, 88, Vows to Play On After 73 Years

At 88 years old, Keith Watts is believed to be Britain’s longest-serving church organist, having dedicated more than seven decades to his ministry at St Thomas a Becket Church in Lydlinch, Dorset. First taking to the organ bench in 1951 at just 15 years old, Watts has scarcely taken a break from his duties over the past 73 years, stepping away only for his National Service, his own wedding, and recovery from a recent shoulder operation. His commitment has been nothing short of extraordinary—during the Covid-19 pandemic, he even set up a portable organ outside the church building to ensure the congregation could still have music. His remarkable tenure is estimated to have accompanied nearly 15,000 hymns, alongside countless weddings and memorial services, all played on the parish’s 1924 reed organ. “I’ll keep playing until I can’t do it any more or someone tells me to stop,” Watts told the Bournemouth Echo, reflecting a devotion that has become the heartbeat of his community.

Watts’ passion for music began early, cycling to Henstridge as a nine-year-old to learn the piano, eventually mastering the organ and becoming the church’s organist at 15. Beyond the church, he played accordion in a dance band and saxophone, though he notes “there aren’t any dance bands any more.” His service to the church extends beyond the organ bench—a former carpenter and joiner, he has crafted collection boxes, tables, and picture frames for the parish and donates all his organist fees back to the church. His ongoing ministry continues even as the Grade II-listed 15th-century church embarks on a £120,000 restoration campaign, with plans to upgrade the organ once structural work completes. Having recently lost his wife Pam after 65 years of marriage, Watts remains resolute, embodying a life of steadfast faith, generosity, and unwavering service.
