Sacred or Secular? St Paul’s Cathedral Partners with Club Promoter fabric, Sparking Controversy

3views

St Paul’s Cathedral has announced an exclusive four-year partnership with club and electronic music promoter fabric, a move aimed at welcoming diverse audiences through contemporary music events. The collaboration will see a range of contemporary artists perform within the historic cathedral, following successful events featuring RY X in 2024 and Patti Smith in 2025. Sandra Lynes Timbrell, Director of Visitor Engagement at St Paul’s, expressed her delight at the partnership, hoping it will encourage “people to discover and engage with this historic building in new and exciting ways.” Cameron Leslie, co-founder of fabric, echoed the sentiment, describing the partnership as “an extraordinary and unexpected coming together of two very different parts of London,” and looking forward to creating something “genuinely special and befitting of this incredible space.”

However, the announcement has drawn sharp criticism from opponents who view it as a desecration of a sacred space. The Cathedral, which serves as the resting place of Admiral Lord Nelson, has faced backlash from those who see the partnership as a sign of declining spiritual integrity. A descendant of Nelson’s elder brother called it “an insult to Lord Nelson’s memory,” asking, “Is nothing sacred any more?” The critic lamented that St Paul’s, as “one of the great sacred spaces of Christianity,” is being misused, suggesting that Nelson himself would have been uneasy about the prospect of “dancing on his grave.” As the first partnership event approaches on October 29, 2026, the debate highlights the tension between tradition and innovation, raising questions about how sacred spaces can engage contemporary culture while preserving their spiritual significance.
