Counterfeit Crystals and Witches on TikTok: Evangelical Alliance Equips Christians to Engage with Rising Alternative Spirituality

With the rise of ‘WitchTok’—a vibrant witchcraft community on TikTok where spell-casting, rituals, and potion-making videos reach millions of views—and the growing popularity of tarot cards and crystals, the Evangelical Alliance has released a new guide to help Christians engage with the world of alternative spirituality. The free resource, part of the Being Human initiative, offers a Biblical response to the trends, unpacking their influence on popular culture and providing practical ways to share faith with the spiritually curious. Katherine Brown, who co-leads the initiative, told Premier Christian News that she hopes the guide can equip Christians who “can get fearful of sharing our faith with people who are exploring practices that are dark and a bit scary,” to see an opportunity to help people find meaning in Christ. The guide comes at a time when spiritual openness is on the rise, but not necessarily toward the Christian faith.

An Evangelical Alliance survey of Christians under 35 revealed that 60% of women had been shown alternative spirituality content without searching for it, highlighting the prevalence of these practices in everyday online spaces. Brown noted that young Christians often find themselves in conversations with friends who compare prayer to manifesting—a practice rooted in self-will rather than submission to God’s will. “You can see how this is a counterfeit version of prayer,” she explained. “The cravings of this generation are met by this spirituality, but it’s counterfeit. It will never satisfy. We have a real opportunity as Christians to point them to the one who will.” The guide also explores tarot card reading, psychedelics, and crystals, sharing personal testimonies of those who have left these practices and turned to Christ. It suggests that Christians can respond by getting to know the motivations behind these practices, welcoming seekers into community, and committing to pray for them.
