The Price of a Scrolling Generation: Meta Pays Historic $18 Billion to Settle Landmark Teen Addiction Lawsuit
The landmark case concluded with a settlement of up to $18 billion, which the company has agreed to pay over ten years to the 48 states and jurisdictions that joined the lawsuit. This money will be used to fund youth online safety initiatives, mental health programs, and other state priorities.
In addition to the financial settlement, Meta has agreed to implement a series of mandatory protections for younger users on its platforms. These measures, which represent a major shift in platform design, include setting a default daily usage time limit of two hours and a “night mode” that blocks access between midnight and 6 a.m., both of which can only be changed by a parent . The company will also introduce stricter age verification, provide more robust parental supervision tools, and limit “doom scrolling” by removing infinite scroll features . While agreeing to the settlement, Meta has denied any liability or wrongdoing . The agreement is still pending final approval by the court.
