A mother’s desperate plea to hold onto her daughter echoed across the churning waters off northern Cyprus on Sunday, as a passenger ferry carrying 267 people capsized shortly after departure, leaving at least eight dead and 20 others missing. Ayten Bicer clung to her 12-year-old daughter, Miray, as the vessel began to overturn, her younger son Mehmet Asaf, 6, also among the missing. “She was saying, ‘Don’t let go,'” Bicer told Reuters, her voice heavy with grief. “And I didn’t let go of my daughter. I swear, I didn’t let her go.” But chaos and tragedy intervened—a falling suitcase struck the mother, causing her to lose her grip. She managed to grab her daughter’s foot, but oil from the vessel made the surface treacherously slick, and the child slipped away into the dark waters. As night fell over the Mediterranean, search crews continued to scour the sea, but with the wreckage resting in more than 1,600 feet of water, hope is fading.

The ferry, traveling from Kyrenia in northern Cyprus to the Turkish port of Tasucu, began taking on water just 15 minutes after departure under what officials described as adverse weather conditions. Survivors were pulled from the water and from the overturned hull as nearby vessels and coast guard crews rushed to respond, helicopters hovering overhead as life-jacketed passengers clung to the capsized ship. Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman cautioned against speculating on the cause, but an investigation is already underway, with nine people connected to the ferry’s operations detained for questioning. The internationally recognized government of Cyprus has offered assistance, but the deep waters have complicated the search for those still missing. As rescue teams continue their work, the anguish of families like the Bicers remains a haunting reminder of the fragility of life and the mercy of a God who sees every tear.
