The Resurrection Reimagined: Mel Gibson Unveils Bold New Vision for ‘Passion of the Christ’ Sequel
Mel Gibson has finally lifted the veil on his long-awaited two-part sequel to The Passion of the Christ, revealing a project that promises to be as audacious as it is ambitious. Speaking at Fan Expo Boston, the Oscar-winning director confirmed that the films—titled The Resurrection of the Christ—will break decisively from the 2004 original by featuring English dialogue and a non-linear narrative structure. “So you can’t just tell the linear story that way,” Gibson explained. “You have to juxtapose the actual event against many other actual events in order to grasp the significance of it, so it’s another jigsaw puzzle.” The decision to use English, he said, was driven by the complexity of the theological themes—the “theological download” viewers will need to absorb—making subtitles in Aramaic or Latin impractical for audiences to fully engage with the story. Having written the script over nearly a decade with Braveheart screenwriter Randall Wallace and his brother Donal Gibson, Gibson has crafted a narrative that ventures beyond the traditional Gospel account, exploring the harrowing of hell, the fall of angels, and the origins of Satan—territory he once described as “an acid trip.”
Production on both films was completed simultaneously in Italy, and the project is now in post-production . The firs installment, Resurrection: Part One, is set for release on May 6, 2027, with Part Two following on May 25, 2028 . Gibson’s vision has also necessitated a complete recasting, with Finnish actor Jaakko Ohtonen stepping into the role of Jesus, replacing Jim Caviezel. The director has described the films as a “jigsaw puzzle” that stand alone while completing each other, a structure he compares to The Godfather trilogy. “I don’t think it’s anything anyone would expect,” Gibson teased. With a budget exceeding $100 million per film, this project represents the most ambitious work of Gibson’s career—a cinematic reckoning with one of history’s most profound mysteries. As he put it, “It’s not a fairy tale, and the object is to make it believable and understandable at the same time, and it’s a very difficult thing to understand.”
