A Sound of Thanksgiving: Historic Salisbury Church Organ Restored to Glory After £37,600 Community Effort
A historic church organ in Salisbury is set to roar back to life after the community rallied to raise £37,600 for a major restoration project. The pipe organ at Salisbury Methodist Church has undergone extensive repairs and upgrades designed to keep it in use for at least another 30 years, ensuring that its music will continue to inspire generations to come. The project involved deep-cleaning hundreds of pipes, upgrading the instrument’s console and action electrics, and installing two new stops to complete the organ’s third division—a meticulous process that has breathed new life into a cherished piece of the church’s heritage. Music coordinator Jonathan Robinson expressed gratitude to all who contributed, saying, “This project was about restoring and updating an important piece of our church’s heritage and ensuring its music continues to inspire our congregation and the wider Salisbury community for decades to come.”
To celebrate the completion of the restoration, the church will host a Reopening and Thanksgiving Concert on 16th September at 7.30pm, featuring a performance by Hugh Morris, director of the Royal School of Church Music, on the newly restored instrument. The concert, which is free to attend, will also serve as a joyful “thank you” to everyone who helped make the project possible, with a retiring collection raising funds for the Royal School of Church Music. The event promises to be a moment of celebration and gratitude, marking the return of a beloved instrument whose music has been a cornerstone of worship and community life for decades. For the congregation and the wider Salisbury community, the restoration is a testament to the power of collective effort and the enduring significance of sacred music in the life of the Church.
