Masterpieces Stolen: Historic Antonello da Messina Paintings Taken in Daring Italian Museum Heist

In a bold overnight raid that has sent shockwaves through the art world, thieves made off with four priceless Renaissance paintings by the Italian master Antonello da Messina from the Regional Interdisciplinary Museum of Messina (MuMe) in Sicily on Saturday night . The heist occurred on Ferragosto, a major Italian national holiday, when the city of Messina was bustling with celebrations for the Feast of the Assumption . The stolen works include three of the five surviving panels of the “Polittico di San Gregorio” altarpiece, painted in 1473, and a highly significant double-sided painting depicting the “Virgin and Child” on one side and “Christ in Pietà” on the other . This small, double-sided work is particularly precious; it had been locked inside a secure display case from which the thieves were able to remove it, and was part of the Wilhelm Soldan collection purchased by the Sicilian Region in 2003 . Two other panels from the altarpiece were later found abandoned outside the museum, leaving three panels still missing.

Investigators are now pursuing several leads, with the primary suspicion being that this was a “commissioned theft” for the black market, possibly organized to satisfy the demands of foreign collectors. Enzo Caruso, the city councillor for culture, suggested that the heist might have been spurred by the Italian state’s $15 million purchase of another Antonello work, the “Ecce Homo,” earlier this year, which would have put the museum’s collection on the radar of criminals. The theft has raised serious questions about the museum’s security protocols, with reports of a delayed alarm system response and the presence of guards on duty at the time. Carabinieri art police are on the case, but as an art-crime analyst pointed out, works this famous and recognizable are notoriously difficult to sell on the open market, potentially forcing the criminals to use them as collateral or for other illegal trades. The loss has been devastating for the museum and the city of Messina, described by the museum director, Marisa Mercurio, as a “tremendous loss for the museum, the city, the community and the art world.”
