Cocaine, Fraternities, and ‘Indoctrination’: Penn State Drug Bust Nets 14 Arrests

A massive cocaine trafficking operation allegedly run by Penn State students has been dismantled, with 14 people facing charges for their involvement in a drug ring that used fraternity houses as hubs for cutting and packaging cocaine. Pennsylvania Attorney General Dave Sunday announced the arrests on Monday, revealing that the operation was allegedly coordinated by two senior fraternity members, Agostino Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson, who made regular trips to Philadelphia and New York to pick up “large quantities” of the illegal drug. Investigators said members of the Delta Upsilon and Sigma Chi fraternities allegedly cut and packaged the cocaine inside their off-campus frat houses before distributing it to Penn State students. In a disturbing twist, authorities revealed that for some pledges, cutting and packaging cocaine was allegedly part of their “indoctrination” into the fraternities—a ritual that Attorney General Sunday described as a “coordinated and highly-profitable drug-trafficking crew.”

Among those charged are 13 Penn State students, with a 14th defendant—the father of one of the students—accused of tampering with evidence and hindering the investigation. The alleged ringleaders, Abbatiello and Thomas Robinson, face felony charges including corrupt organizations, conspiracy, and dealing in proceeds of unlawful activity. Two others, Mohammed Hurabi and Lars Zeepvat, face similar felony charges, while eight additional students face misdemeanor possession charges . Penn State University has responded swiftly, placing Delta Upsilon on interim suspension and noting that Sigma Chi is “not a recognized organization and operates outside of the University’s support and oversight” . In a statement, Vice President for Student Affairs Andrea Dowhower said, “We are horrified by these serious allegations… Criminal activity, including hazing, such as this has no place at our institution.” As the investigation continues, the case serves as a stark reminder of the dangers of drug culture and hazing on college campuses—and the devastating consequences for those who choose to participate.
