A Greener Gospel: Church in Wales Partners with Benefact Trust to Pursue Net Zero
The Church in Wales has announced a new three-year partnership with Benefact Trust aimed at helping churches, cathedrals, and church halls across Wales significantly reduce their carbon emissions. The initiative, which forms part of the Church in Wales’ wider commitment to achieving Net Zero by 2030, will provide two funding streams to support congregations in their environmental efforts. Development grants of up to £5,000 will be available for churches exploring low-carbon solutions, including feasibility studies, energy-saving measures, and trials of new technologies. Meanwhile, larger capital projects such as heat pumps, solar panels, battery storage, and insulation improvements will be eligible for demonstrator grants of up to £45,000. Applications will be processed through a diocesan nomination system to ensure projects are ready to proceed and capable of delivering measurable carbon reductions.
Dr. Julia Edwards, Director of Climate Change for the Church in Wales, expressed her enthusiasm for the partnership, stating, “We are delighted to be in partnership with Benefact Trust with this net-zero programme. The collaboration enables churches to action their plans for low-carbon technologies, and in so doing, markedly reduce their climate-change impact and bear witness more widely to the urgent need to care for God’s creation today and for the future.” Successful grant recipients will be expected to monitor energy use, record project outcomes, and provide evidence of environmental benefits, ensuring that the initiative not only reduces emissions but also serves as a model for sustainable stewardship. As churches across Wales embrace this opportunity, they are demonstrating that faith and environmental responsibility can go hand in hand, caring for creation as an act of worship.
