Finding God in the Laughter: Comedian Ms. Pat Shares Powerful Lessons About Faith and Joy
Renowned comedian Ms. Pat (Patricia Williams-Lee), known to many from her work on “The Ms. Pat Show,” recently sat down with Maina Mwaura to discuss her new book, “Ms. American Dream,” and the powerful role laughter has played in her journey of faith and resilience. The conversation began with two minutes of laughter, a fitting introduction to a woman who has used humor as her ultimate tool for navigating life’s deepest struggles. Throughout her book, Ms. Pat draws readers in with laughter even as she describes the hardships she endured growing up in the rough areas of Atlanta, where she still lives. There were moments in the book that were difficult to read, yet she found a way to make readers laugh through them. Ms. Pat doesn’t describe herself as religious but as someone who has a relationship with God, and during their time together in prayer, Mwaura noticed how laughter can even make our attitude toward God sweeter.
Laughter, as Ms. Pat and Mwaura discussed, has a way of removing and lessening the stress and worries of life so that when we approach the throne of God, we come with a heart at ease and confidence, knowing that God is going to do what He says He’s going to do. Proverbs 17:22 describes that a merry heart is good for the body and soul. Ms. Pat shared how an unknown Atlanta bus driver in her childhood would offer her free rides, talk with her, and make sure she stayed out of trouble, and how she later decided to adopt two of her family members who were going through extreme challenges of life. The Bible describes being a cheerful giver in 2 Corinthians 9:7, and Ms. Pat spoke of how, when she and her husband decided to open their home, God provided. Mwaura reflected that no matter what calling one might find themselves in, we can rest assured that God has placed a laughter box in all of us that He wants us to use—not only for ourselves but to spread to others in a time and season when people need laughter more than ever.
