A Miracle of Modernity: Ancient Cumbrian Church to Receive Running Water for the First Time in 1,000 Years
For nearly a millennium, St James’ Church in Great Ormside, Cumbria, has stood as a silent witness to history—its stone walls holding centuries of prayers, baptisms, and burials. But one thing has remained remarkably unchanged: the church has never had running water. That is about to change. Thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Headley Trust, made on the recommendation of the National Churches Trust, the 11th-century church will finally be connected to a mains water supply, bringing a modern convenience to a sacred space that has relied on containers for its water since its founding. The funding will also allow for the installation of a toilet and a small kitchen, facilities that church leaders hope will breathe new life into the building and its community.
The lack of basic amenities had taken a toll on the church’s ability to serve its community, with many people stopping their attendance and the church unable to host school or community events. Sally Ridley, treasurer of St James, expressed deep gratitude for the support, saying, “We are extremely grateful for the help of the National Churches Trust, the Headley Trust and those who have donated money to them, in trying to achieve our ambition to make this historic church more welcoming and useful to our generation and those who will come after us.” Built on a man-made mound dating back to pre-Christian times, the church is steeped in history—it was here that the 7th-century Ormside Bowl was unearthed in 1823, now displayed at the Yorkshire Museum, and where a Viking warrior burial was discovered in 1898. As the church prepares for its next chapter, Ridley hopes it will remain “a quiet and safe place for all who come,” continuing to minister to the spiritual needs of generations to come.
