Tense negotiations between Senate Republicans and Democrats over President Donald Trump’s nominees broke down on Saturday night, with no deal reached. Trump accused Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of demanding over $1 billion to approve a small number of nominees, calling it “political extortion.” Schumer countered that Trump gave up on negotiations, despite both sides working towards a bipartisan solution.

The negotiations aimed to confirm up to 60 of Trump’s nominees, all of which had bipartisan support in committee. However, Democrats demanded the White House unfreeze billions in National Institute of Health and foreign aid funding, as well as a future agreement not to propose more clawback packages. Schumer claimed Trump’s move was a victory for Senate Democrats, saying, “He took his ball, he went home, leaving Democrats and Republicans alike wondering what the hell happened.” Trump responded on social media, telling Schumer to “GO TO HELL!” and urging Republicans to “explain to your constituents what bad people the Democrats are”.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune noted that while there were several moments where a deal seemed possible, ultimately, both sides couldn’t agree. Republicans are now considering changing the confirmation process rules when lawmakers return in September. Schumer warned against this, calling it a “huge mistake” and urging Trump to work with Senate Democrats, especially with the deadline to fund the government looming.
