‘A Good Decision’ or ‘Travesty of Justice’? Christians React to Trump’s Execution Livestream Reversal

The Trump administration has abruptly reversed its controversial plan to livestream the execution of Fort Hood shooter Nidal Hasan, igniting a fierce debate among Christians. On Thursday morning, President Trump took to social media to announce the reversal, writing on Truth Social, “Many very good and well meaning people would rather not watch him die, through streaming, or through any other visual device.” Hasan was convicted of killing 13 and injuring more than 30 people in the 2009 shooting and was later sentenced to death. Following the president’s announcement, a handful of recognizable names and faces in the Christian world took to social media to express their agreement with Trump’s change in course. Christian conservative radio host Erick Erickson called it “a good decision.” “Not live streaming the Nidal Hasan execution is a good decision,” Erickson wrote on X/Twitter. “Many of those who claim they just want to see justice really just want to see a snuff film they can meme.”

Clare Anne Ath, regional director of government affairs for the Human Coalition and a Catholic, agreed with Trump’s decision, calling it the “right call.” “We have a serious problem in this country with turning death and violence into entertainment and live-streaming an execution would only make it worse,” she wrote. “Human dignity doesn’t disappear because someone commits evil. Rejecting the culture of death means rejecting it even when it’s unpopular.” Matthew Lee Anderson, a teacher at Baylor University and the founder of Mere Orthodoxy, also believed that canceling the livestream was the right move. “This is clearly the right choice and President Trump should be commended for making it,” he posted. However, not everyone agreed. Ben Zeisloft, communications director for Foundation to Abolish Abortion, said Trump’s decision was a “travesty of justice.” “President Donald Trump canceling the public execution of an Islamic terrorist is a travesty of justice,” he wrote. “While the execution will proceed, making the execution private only projects weakness, but fails to deter other evildoers with the threat of severe punishment.” Some, like evangelical Christian and blogger Jackie Chea, remained unsure. “I was never sure whether live streaming was the right choice or not,” she posted. “I’m not sure there was a correct or incorrect outcome in that regard. The important thing is that the execution ensures justice and deters future traitorous, murderous, terrorist acts.” Despite the cancellation, Trump made clear in his post that he felt there was value in making Hasan’s execution by firing squad available for public consumption. “I think streaming the execution for all to see might have been a strong deterrent for the World to witness how America deals with Terrorists and SCUM like Hasan,” Trump wrote.
