Faith Still Alive: New Survey Finds Most Americans Believe in God, Miracles, and the Resurrection of Jesus

A new comprehensive survey is challenging the prevailing notion of an increasingly secular America, revealing that a strong majority of citizens still hold profound beliefs in God and the supernatural. The data, part of the latest chapter in the American Bible Society’s State of the Bible report, found that 68 percent of Americans believe in God, while 20 percent are not sure and 13 percent do not. Further, 62 percent believe in heaven and 64 percent in angels, while majorities also believe in the reality of Satan (55 percent), hell (53 percent), and demons (51 percent). Perhaps most striking, a slight majority of Americans believe the resurrection of Jesus was an actual event in history, underscoring the enduring influence of the Christian faith on the nation’s spiritual landscape.

The findings offer a counter-narrative to the widespread assumption that America is rapidly abandoning its religious roots. While church attendance and institutional affiliation may be declining, personal belief in the supernatural and the core tenets of Christianity remains remarkably resilient. This survey suggests that faith in America is not dying—it is simply taking new forms, often outside the walls of traditional religious institutions. For believers, these numbers are an encouragement and a call to action: the harvest is plentiful, and the fields are ripe for those willing to share the hope of the Gospel. As the Church seeks to engage a changing culture, the data reminds us that the human heart still longs for the transcendent, and that the message of a God who loves, who performs miracles, and who conquered death is as relevant and powerful as ever.
