Navigating the ‘BER Months’ with Purpose: A Call to Stewardship and Spiritual Focus

The air is crisp, the leaves are turning, and the unmistakable buzz of the holiday season is upon us. For many, this time of year is a whirlwind of activity—pumpkin-spiced everything, endless social gatherings, and the pressure to create the perfect holiday experience. But for those of us who grew up hearing our parents call them the “BER Months,” this season is a sacred reminder to steward our time and resources wisely as the year draws to a close. As Christ followers, we are called to pause amidst the chaos and remember that everything we have—our time, our finances, and our energy—belongs to God. The BER months, spanning September through December, invite us to finish the year with intentionality, aligning our hearts with the One who holds all things together.

In the book of Matthew, Jesus makes it clear: “Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness” (Matthew 6:33). This instruction is especially relevant during the hustle and bustle of the BER season. It’s easy to get swept up in the endless activities, the gift-buying, the party-hopping, and the social obligations. But when we seek God first, we discover that He is not asking us to abandon celebration—He is inviting us to participate in the events He has ordained for us. When we submit our calendars to Him, we find that we show up at places and gatherings where He is already at work. The BER months become less about frantic activity and more about divine appointments, meaningful connections, and opportunities to be the hands and feet of Jesus.
As we navigate the final stretch of the year, let us remember that the greatest gift we can give is not the perfect present or the most elaborate feast, but the gift of our presence—fully engaged, fully present, and fully surrendered to God’s purposes. This season, let’s be intentional about saying yes to what truly matters and no to the distractions that drain our energy and focus. Whether it’s sharing a meal with a neighbor, volunteering at a local shelter, or simply spending quiet moments in prayer, we can make the BER months a time of spiritual renewal and joyful stewardship. In doing so, we honor not only the season but the One who gives us every breath and every opportunity to reflect His love. After all, these months are not just about celebrating the end of the year; they are about preparing our hearts for the year to come, and for the eternity that awaits us in Him.
