Jordan Unveils $120 Million Plan to Commemorate 2,000th Anniversary of Jesus’ Baptism
Jordan has launched an ambitious $120 million development plan at the Baptism Site of Jesus Christ (Al-Maghtas) ahead of the 2,000th anniversary of Jesus’ baptism in 2030. The project, overseen by a high-level National Committee chaired by Prime Minister Jafar Hassan and operating under the directives of King Abdullah II, aims to transform the site into a premier global destination for Christian pilgrimage. This initiative was proposed by the Council of Church Leaders in Jordan and is being developed through cooperation between the government, national institutions, the private sector, and international partners.
The multi-faceted plan includes four main projects, with agreements signed at the Prime Ministry in August 2026 . These include a $50 million Baptism Museum covering 5,500 square meters, which will showcase the history and religious significance of the site through contemporary architectural design and specialized exhibitions . A $40 million integrated pilgrims and visitors’ village will complement the site with a visitors’ center, hotel, restaurants, shops, and a church. Additional infrastructure works worth $27 million and a $3 million green corridor, which will protect biodiversity and develop ecological trails in line with UNESCO recommendations, are also part of the comprehensive masterplan. Work on the museum and pilgrim village is expected to begin in 2027, with all projects scheduled for completion in early 2029 . According to Tourism Minister Imad Hijazin, the agreements represent “a shared commitment, a national responsibility, and a strategic partnership” aimed at strengthening Jordan’s international profile as a land of religious heritage.
