Churches Join Forces with PM Andy Burnham in Bold Bid to End Rough Sleeping by Christmas

39views

Prime Minister Andy Burnham is set to convene a landmark summit this autumn, bringing together churches, faith groups, charities, and businesses in a national drive to get every rough sleeper off the streets by Christmas. Ending rough sleeping was Burnham’s first pledge upon entering office last month, and he began his tenure by visiting a Catholic-founded homelessness charity in Westminster, signaling his commitment to the cause. Downing Street has described “charities, faith groups and community organisations” as being “at the heart of efforts to end homelessness,” and the government has pledged an additional £8.4 million to the Ending Homelessness in Communities Fund, which has already supported more than 100 projects with £47 million over the past three years. A total package of £442 million will provide emergency accommodation and practical support, following the successful approaches of the pandemic-era “Everyone In” campaign, though the Conservatives have expressed concerns that the plan lacks detail for delivery.

Churches to meet with PM in bid to get rough sleepers off streets by Christmas

Churches are already leading the way in tackling rough sleeping, and their role is being recognized as essential to the success of the initiative. Rachael Maskell, MP for York Central, highlighted the work of the Salvation Army’s NAPpads project, which provides shelter and wash facilities for rough sleepers, as an “incredible first-step” for those who may find traditional hostel accommodation challenging. She also pointed to the Methodist-backed Carecent, which offers breakfast and social space, and the New Ways Wellbeing Centre, which runs boxing sessions to “build resilience, particularly of young homeless people.” Maskell called on churches to continue their vital work, urging them to “open your hands and see where it takes you.” As the summit approaches, the partnership between faith communities and the government represents a promising step toward ensuring that no one is left without shelter this Christmas.
