A History Erased: Russian Drone Destroys Nearly 300-Year-Old Ukrainian Church
A devastating drone strike has reduced one of Ukraine’s oldest and most treasured wooden churches to ashes, extinguishing nearly three centuries of history in a single blaze. The Holy Vvedenska Church in Beryslav, Kherson region, was engulfed in flames after a Russian drone attack on August 2, leaving the 1726 structure—a protected national monument—in ruins . Built entirely from oak using wooden pegs instead of metal nails, the church was a rare and fragile survivor of Zaporizhian ecclesiastical architecture, having stood through countless upheavals, including the Soviet era when it was converted into a storage facility and nearly dismantled for firewood . Originally constructed by Poltava Cossacks, the church was dismantled and transported along the Dnipro River in 1785 before being rebuilt in Beryslav, where it was later moved to the town’s Vvedenske Cemetery and rededicated . Its destruction is not merely a loss of bricks and timber, but the violent erasure of a sacred witness to Ukrainian faith, resilience, and identity.
The attack comes as international concern mounts over the systematic damage and destruction of Ukraine’s religious and cultural heritage. Ukraine’s Ministry of Culture reports that more than 1,700 cultural heritage sites and 2,500 cultural infrastructure facilities have been damaged since the full-scale invasion began in 2022, with over 500 completely destroyed . Deputy Prime Minister and Culture Minister Tetiana Berezhna condemned the strike, stating, “Russia is purposefully destroying Ukraine’s cultural heritage and attacking civilians. We document every such crime. Cultural heritage cannot be a target” .
