US Launches New Strikes Against Iran as Regional Tensions Escalate

6views

The US military conducted a new wave of offensive strikes against Iran on Sunday, hitting dozens of targets with precision munitions in what Central Command described as an effort to “degrade Iran’s ability to continue attacking international shipping flowing through the Strait of Hormuz” . The operation marked the latest escalation in a series of tit-for-tat attacks between the two nations, with US forces employing fighter aircraft, naval vessels, and both aerial and sea-based drones to strike Iranian military air-defense systems, coastal radar sites, missile and drone capabilities, and small boats. Iranian media reported that one person was killed and two others wounded on Farur Island in southern Iran’s Hormozgan Province following the attacks, while Tehran said it had again closed the strategic waterway . CENTCOM, however, insisted that the Strait of Hormuz—a “vital maritime corridor for global trade”—remains open, and that US forces are “postured and prepared to ensure that freedom of navigation remains available to commercial shipping despite Iran’s continued unwarranted aggression.”

The strikes come as the White House faces mounting concerns over Iranian threats targeting President Donald Trump. The Secret Service addressed reports of an alleged assassination plot during Trump’s recent trip to Turkey, stating that officials “consume information on a global level to effectively execute our protective operations” while declining to comment on specific intelligence matters. The reported warning followed a week-long funeral for Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, during which mourners chanted slogans calling for Trump’s death and the downfall of the United States. Trump has previously acknowledged being on Iran’s “list,” telling reporters that “these are evil, sick people” who want to “take out the U.S. leader — me.” As both military operations and threats escalate, the broader regional implications continue to draw international concern, with Egypt, Iraq, and the United Arab Emirates condemning Iranian attacks on Gulf states as a “flagrant violation” of sovereignty.
