The TikTok Saint? Manchester Student, 21, Could Become First Gen Z Catholic Saint

8views

A 21-year-old Manchester man who died in 2018 is on the path to making history as the Catholic Church’s first Gen Z saint. Pedro Ballester, born in 1996 and raised in a devout Catholic family in Manchester, has been formally put forward for beatification and canonisation by the Diocese of Salford, which describes him as “a man whose life of faith and witness continues to inspire many.” Known for his warmth, generosity, and deep dedication to God from his late teens, Pedro was a member of Opus Dei and committed himself to celibacy while still a teenager. He began studying chemical engineering at Imperial College London, but after just one term, he was diagnosed with advanced pelvic cancer. Rather than succumbing to despair, the diocese reports that Pedro accepted his illness with “remarkable faith, offering his suffering for the Pope, the Church and all souls, and bearing his condition with deep serenity and trust in God.” Just weeks before his death, he told friends that despite being close to the end, he had “never been happier.”

Since his passing, Pedro’s reputation for holiness has only grown, prompting the Church to open a Cause—the first official step toward sainthood. The diocese is now calling on the public to submit personal testimonies, memories, letters, and diaries that can help build a full picture of his life and virtues. Fr Joseph Evans, Chaplain of Greygarth Hall, reflected on Pedro’s suffering as his true classroom: “Suffering was the curriculum, the syllabus, which Pedro was given to study… and he passed with distinction.” More than 500 people, including 40 priests, packed Holy Name church in Manchester for his funeral. The University of Manchester later awarded him a posthumous Master’s degree in Engineering—the first ever granted by its School of Chemical Engineering. As the Church prepares to examine whether this young man in hoodies and trainers lived a life of heroic virtue, Pedro Ballester stands as an unlikely but profoundly compelling candidate for sainthood: a Gen Z student who turned terminal cancer into a masterclass in joy, faith, and surrender. His cause asks a striking question—what if the next saint isn’t a medieval mystic or a martyred missionary, but someone who could have been sitting next to you in lecture halls and hospital waiting rooms?
