An 18-year-old worker named Kobe initially mistook the gleaming pieces for ordinary 1 Euro coins, but it quickly became clear that they had found something far more valuable. Project leader Mario described the moment as a “crazy feeling,” recalling that his workers shouted, “We found gold!” As they continued to dig, more coins and bars emerged, and the team promptly contacted their boss—and then the police.
Police officers arrived at the site, cataloged the treasure, and placed it in a high-security federal government vault for safekeeping. Under Belgian law, the rightful owner has five years to claim the gold; if no one steps forward, it will belong to the finders. While the workers may not get to keep the fortune, Mario made it clear that keeping the gold never crossed his mind. “It’s about so many coins and bars, that almost wouldn’t be possible. Besides, it would also be theft,” he told VRT news. Kobe, however, still hopes for a finder’s fee: “That would be nice.” The building is owned by an organization that provides welfare support to the Flemish community, and its director expressed hope that the gold could help with the “enormous need we experience daily.” Local police have warned treasure hunters not to visit the site, as it remains a dangerous construction zone, and the gold has already been removed.
