“They’re Grooming Children in Our Pews”: Christian Filmmaker’s Viral Exposé Shakes UK

103views

A chilling new short film is tearing back the curtain on the insidious reality of county lines drug exploitation, revealing how criminal networks are systematically grooming vulnerable young people—including within church congregations—with promises of belonging that swiftly turn into violent coercion. “The Orphan,” written and directed by Christian filmmaker Leo Powell, has skyrocketed to over 721,000 views on YouTube by graphically depicting the grooming pathway from initial gifts and false loyalty to debt bondage and forced cross-country drug trafficking. Powell warns this is not a distant crime but a pervasive threat striking at the heart of communities, stating, “Thousands of young people are being drawn into this… The film shows how grooming can begin before a young person is deceived into travelling long distances to sell drugs.”

Released amid a major national crackdown that has seen over 8,000 arrests and 3,000 drug lines shut down, the film—partly funded by British Transport Police—serves as a stark counterpoint to government progress reports, highlighting a desperate need for increased resources. While praising police efforts, Powell issued a grave warning that funding cuts are hampering the fight and called for greater investment in youth support organizations. He emphasized that faith communities are now awakening to the danger targeting their own youth, stating, “Churches are increasingly recognising that county lines can affect young people within their own congregations.” Through this harrowing project, Powell aims to arm viewers with knowledge and offer a lifeline: “Faith is about bringing a message of hope… and see that there is a way out.”
