Heaven on Earth: Carlisle’s ‘Starry’ Cathedral Window Voted Nation’s #1!

In a divine upset that has shattered expectations, the historic East Window of Carlisle Cathedral has been officially crowned the nation’s favourite stained glass masterpiece, triumphing over legendary competitors like York Minster and Wells Cathedral. After an estimated 2.1 million votes were cast in a monumental public poll by the Association of English Cathedrals, the panel’s stunning blend of 14th-century ancient glass and vivid Victorian narratives depicting Jesus’s life captivated the nation, soaring to the top spot.

The Venerable Michael Everitt, Interim Dean of Carlisle, beamed that the window offers “a glimpse of heaven,” its biblical scenes radiantly framed beneath the cathedral’s famous starry vaulted ceiling. To celebrate this celestial victory, the cathedral will launch a new guided tour, “Sacred Light,” on February 21st, inviting art and history lovers to step inside and experience the newly anointed king of coloured light for themselves.
