Cuffs, Grammy Night, and a Chain Emoji: Don Lemon Vows Fight After Arrest

Former CNN anchor Don Lemon was released from federal custody on January 30th, just a day after his dramatic arrest while covering the Grammy Awards. Lemon was taken into custody in connection with a protest earlier this month at a Minnesota church, facing charges of civil rights violations and conspiracy for allegedly interfering with religious freedom. Standing defiantly outside a Los Angeles courthouse, Lemon invoked his constitutional rights, stating, “I have spent my entire career covering the news. I will not stop now… I will not be silenced.” His lawyer, Abbe Lowell, insisted Lemon was engaged in “constitutionally protected work” as a journalist documenting the event, and vowed to fight the charges, which also include a citation of the FACE Act protecting access to houses of worship.

The arrest has ignited a fierce political and legal firestorm. The White House publicly celebrated the action on social media with a taunting post reading “When life gives you Lemons,” accompanied by a chain emoji—a move that drew swift condemnation from press freedom advocates and some of Lemon’s former colleagues. Actor and activist Jane Fonda, appearing outside the courthouse in support, declared, “Don Lemon is a professional journalist… he and his producer were doing their job, nothing more, nothing less.” With a court date in Minneapolis looming in the coming weeks, the case is poised to become a high-profile battleground over the limits of protest, the protections for journalistic work, and the tense intersection of politics and the First Amendment.
