City Hall Backtracks: NYC Mayor Admits He Can’t Arrest Netanyahu Despite Campaign Promise
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has officially backed down from his campaign pledge to have Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu arrested, conceding that the city lacks the legal authority to enforce an International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant . In a video message on Tuesday, Mamdani stated that after reviewing all legal avenues, it became “clear that we do not have the independent legal authority to enforce this warrant” . He has now called on the federal government to execute the arrest should Netanyahu visit for the United Nations General Assembly in September . Despite this reversal, Mamdani reaffirmed that Netanyahu remains “not welcome in New York City” and continues to label him a “war criminal.”
The mayor’s announcement immediately drew sharp pushback from both the White House and Israeli officials. President Donald Trump has declared that Netanyahu “will not be arrested, in any way, shape, or form, while in the United States of America” . The ICC issued arrest warrants for Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant in November 2024 over alleged war crimes in Gaza, but neither the U.S. nor Israel are signatories to the Rome Statute that established the court . Netanyahu’s office has dismissed the ICC warrant as “baseless” and characterized the court as a “kangaroo court” . The episode marks a significant political retreat for the mayor, whose fiery campaign rhetoric regarding the arrest has now been tempered by the cold reality of municipal jurisdiction.
