Pastor William Kumuyi, the General Superintendent of the Deeper Christian Life Ministry, has introduced significant changes to the church’s marriage guidelines. Speaking at the 2025 Global Family and Marriage Conference, Kumuyi announced that visits during courtship are now permitted, provided an elder accompanies the couple. This move aims to allow intending couples to get to know each other better, especially in their natural environments. According to Kumuyi, this change will enable women to see how their prospective husbands interact with their families and others, providing valuable insight into their behavior and character.

Distinguishing Church Traditions from Biblical Commandments
Kumuyi emphasized the importance of distinguishing between church traditions and biblical commandments. He clarified that the six-month courtship policy was an administrative guideline, not a biblical requirement, introduced to help couples avoid sin. However, he noted that marriage is a lifelong commitment that greatly influences a person’s future, and couples should have more opportunities to know each other better. By making these adjustments, Kumuyi underlined the need for members to understand that rules should serve to guide, not burden, their walk with God.
A Shift towards Maturity and Trust
The Deeper Life leader emphasized that this new allowance is built on trust, expressing confidence that members will act with maturity and not misuse the opportunity. He encouraged members to be responsible and not visit each other at odd hours or engage in inappropriate behavior. This change reflects a shift towards maturity and trust, allowing couples to build stronger relationships before marriage.
