A recent Gallup survey has revealed a concerning trend in American patriotism, with national pride hitting an all-time low. Only 58% of Americans express strong pride in their country, marking a significant 9-point decline from last year and a nearly 30-point drop since 2013. This erosion of national unity is largely attributed to growing political and generational divides.

The decline in American pride is particularly pronounced among Democrats, with only 36% expressing strong national pride – a 26-point fall from 62% in 2024 and a 44-point drop from 80% in 2015. In contrast, 92% of Republicans report being extremely or very proud to be American, a figure that has remained relatively stable over the years. Independents also showed a decline, with 53% reporting strong pride, down from 60% last year.
The survey highlights a broader trend of declining patriotism across different age groups, with Gen Z adults (born 1997-2012) expressing the lowest levels of pride at 41%. According to Jeffrey Jones, Gallup’s senior editor, “Each generation is less patriotic than the prior generation, and Gen Z is definitely much lower than anybody else.” The survey was conducted from June 2-19, prior to the US military strike in Iran, and its impact on national pride remains to be seen.
