Calvin University Launches New Center to Explore the Intersection of AI, Technology, and Christian Faith
Calvin University has announced the establishment of the Calvin Center for Faith and Technology, a new interdisciplinary center that will explore how artificial intelligence and emerging technologies can be developed and used responsibly through a Christian perspective. Located in the School of Engineering and Computer Science, the center will combine elements of engineering, computer science, and faith while “bringing together perspectives from across the liberal arts and professional programs.” The center aims to provoke deep and thoughtful questions that integrate technology into every fabric of our lives, from education and business to health care, science, philosophy, psychology, media, worship, governance, and other areas of society. Calvin University President Greg Elzinga emphasized that AI’s growing impact on our world, particularly on faith, deserves serious study and consideration.
“Technology is shaping nearly every dimension of our lives, and Christians need to be part of that conversation, not simply reacting to technological change, but thoughtfully considering how technology can be developed and used in ways that serve our neighbors and contribute to the flourishing of our communities,” Elzinga said. “This center reflects the very best of Calvin University: a Reformed vision for engaging the world, a deep commitment to faith and learning, excellence in engineering and computer science, and a Christian liberal arts foundation that prepares students to serve and lead in every sphere of life.” Calvin University, a private Christian school founded in 1876, is an educational institution of the Christian Reformed Church and is ranked as the No. 4 college in the Midwest among regional colleges. The school prides itself on helping students grow spiritually through their mind, body, and soul. While the Faith and Technology Center and its programs are still growing, the launch represents a significant step forward in equipping Christians to engage thoughtfully and faithfully with the technologies that are shaping the future.
