Denial and Condemnation: Pezeshkian Blames Washington for War While Offering Nuclear Concessions

In an exclusive interview on Fox News’ “Special Report” with Bret Baier, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian flatly denied that Tehran is pursuing a nuclear weapon while insisting his country is willing to submit its nuclear program to international inspection. “Not at all. Not at all,” Pezeshkian said when asked directly if Iran wants a nuclear bomb. “Our martyred, esteemed supreme leader had announced several times that, from a religious decree, it is unholy. It is illegal.” The Iranian leader’s denial came amid long-term international scrutiny of Iran’s uranium enrichment activities, which have reached levels far beyond those typically used for civilian nuclear power—the central rationale President Donald Trump cited for launching Operation Epic Fury in February. Pezeshkian indicated Tehran would be open to diluting its enriched uranium and allowing outside verification, stating, “We said we’re willing to dilute them. It’s not a big deal. We are willing to submit ourselves to verification.”

Pezeshkian placed the blame for the nearly seven-month war squarely on Washington, accusing the United States of blocking diplomacy and attacking Iran rather than engaging in dialogue. He pointed to the failed memorandum of understanding signed with Trump in June, which was intended to halt hostilities and establish a framework for a broader agreement, including a 60-day process toward a final deal. “We have no problems. We did reach an agreement with your president,” Pezeshkian said. “That agreement was signed, and, based on that, we are willing and still wish to move forward.” He criticized the U.S. for what he described as a pattern of aggression, saying, “The problem is that America, instead of conducting dialog, they descend into the arena by bombing us first, by blocking every pathway.” He also defended Iran’s military actions as self-defense, stating, “We do not seek to kill Americans, as shown by actions, demonstrable actions. America has sought to kill Iranians.”

The interview also touched on reports that Iranian forces used Chinese satellite imagery to carry out a deadly strike on a U.S. base in Jordan, which killed three U.S. service members. Pezeshkian denied direct knowledge of the reports, saying, “I’m specifically unaware of these purported images that you talk about. Now, what do militaries do with one another between two countries? It is their own business within their own guidelines.” Despite the tensions, Pezeshkian maintained that Iran does not want the war to continue, while placing the responsibility for ending it on Washington. “We will stand resolutely to defend ourselves. We never sought war. We do not seek war,” he said. “But we do not wish to continue. It’s America that must choose whether it wants to end this or not.” As diplomatic efforts remain stalled and economic pressure mounts, the interview highlighted the deep mistrust and divergent narratives that continue to define the U.S.-Iran conflict, with each side blaming the other for the breakdown in negotiations and the devastating toll of the war.
