The Invitation to Rest: What Every Christian Woman Should Know About Burnout and Hormones

19views

Some mornings, anxiety weighs on your chest like a sandbag. Other mornings, you feel unstoppable. If you are a woman with emotions, you know this roller coaster all too well—and it often intensifies in the middle-aged years, just when life’s responsibilities seem to peak. According to a 2025 McKinsey and LeanIn.Org report, 42% of women overall report frequent burnout, a gap that widens sharply in leadership, where 60% of senior-level women report burnout versus 50% of senior-level men. The reason isn’t a capability issue or a capacity problem. It’s something deeper: our hormones. A woman’s 28-day cycle can be described as all four seasons rolled into one—the cold, isolating winter of the luteal phase, the hopeful spring of a new period, the confident summer of the follicular phase, and the crisp fall of ovulation. In perimenopause, these seasons take on a new life of extremes, as estrogen and progesterone engage in a wild dance that can leave us feeling unrecognizable.

But what if God designed these seasons with purpose? When we take a step back, we remember that God made women as “suitable helpers” (Genesis 2:18), a design that includes our hormonal rhythms. Rather than seeing our cycles as a curse, we can recognize them as part of God’s intentional creation. Jesus Himself invites tired women to rest. In Mark 6:31, after the disciples returned from ministry, stretched and exhausted, Jesus said, “Come with me by yourselves to a quiet place and get some rest.” He didn’t dismiss their need for rest; He prioritized it. And yet, He also invited them to be part of the miracle that followed—feeding the five thousand. The same invitation extends to us today: we are called to serve our families, communities, and churches, but not at the expense of our own God-given need for rest. If we ignore that invitation, we may miss the miracle. So take heart, sister. Your hormones are not a flaw; they are part of your design. And Jesus, who knows your frame, invites you to come away with Him and rest.
