A Drive to Nowhere: North Carolina Doctor Accused of Shooting Two Sisters in Shocking Interstate Road Rage Attack
A North Carolina physician has been arrested and charged with multiple felonies after he allegedly opened fire on a Jeep during a road rage incident on Interstate 77, wounding two sisters—ages 12 and 20—in a terrifying daylight attack. Dr. Richard Thomas Arriviello, 61, of Charlotte, was driving his Mercedes-Benz northbound on the highway just three miles north of the North Carolina-Virginia state line on the morning of August 22 when gunfire erupted. According to Virginia State Police, Arriviello fired into the moving Jeep, striking both sisters in the legs. The victims were airlifted to a hospital with injuries that are not considered life-threatening, but the emotional trauma of the incident will linger far longer. Arriviello fled the scene but was stopped by troopers about 15 miles away and taken into custody without further incident.
The 61-year-old emergency medicine physician, who owns Family Urgent Care in Monroe, North Carolina, now faces a litany of felony charges, including malicious shooting into an occupied vehicle, maliciously causing bodily harm with intent to maim, and use of a firearm while committing a felony. He remains jailed without bond at the New River Valley Regional Jail and is scheduled to appear in court on September 29. While the driver of the Jeep was cited for reckless driving, state police have not disclosed what sparked the alleged road rage encounter or whether a firearm was recovered from Arriviello’s vehicle. According to North Carolina Medical Board records, Arriviello has been licensed since 2010 with no public disciplinary actions, making the shocking allegations all the more jarring. As the investigation continues, the case serves as a sobering reminder of how quickly a moment of anger on the road can spiral into a life-altering act of violence.
