A Fear for the Soul of Britain: Bishop of Croydon Mourns Professor Jason Arday and Warns of a ‘Culture Losing Decency’
In the wake of the tragic death of Professor Jason Arday, the Bishop of Croydon, the Rt Revd Dr Rosemarie Mallett, has issued a somber reflection on the state of British society, expressing deep concern over a culture she believes is losing its sense of basic human decency. Professor Arday, 41, who made history in 2023 as the University of Cambridge’s youngest Black professor, was found unresponsive at a London address on August 14, following intense public scrutiny over allegations of plagiarism and questions about his personal backstory. Bishop Mallett described his death as “tragic and avoidable” and questioned the response from academia and the media, writing, “These past days have been filled with reflection – on the culture of British academia, on culture and standards in our media, on race and truthfulness. Some of this ‘reflection’ has been helpful, some opportunistic and shallow – some blatantly harmful.”
Bishop Mallett, a doctor of sociology, spoke of a pervasive sense of anxiety emerging in the wake of Arday’s death, expressing fears for young people who “have witnessed the cruelty to which Jason was subjected” and who “may now no longer dare to hope or dream of what they may be able to achieve.” She warned, “I fear for a culture and a Britain that is lowering its standards – not of academic rigour but of basic human decency.” Yet, in the midst of her lament, she turned to the hope found in Christ, urging believers to “look again to Christ, to seek his peace and his guidance.” She reminded readers of the Christian call to compassion, noting that “when we turn to Christ, we inevitably notice how he treats people and who it is that he prioritises – those who are maligned, those who are overlooked, those who have failed, those who are treated as ‘nothing’ by the rest of the world.” Her words are a poignant call for the Church to embody the love of Christ in a moment of national sorrow.
