‘You Are Not Alone’: Colombia’s Deadliest Earthquake in a Decade Sparks Massive Christian Relief Effort

A powerful 7.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, August 10, claiming over 200 lives, injuring more than 1,200, and leaving thousands missing in the nation’s strongest tremor in over a decade. The epicenter was near San José del Palmar, a community in the Chocó region roughly 250 miles west of Bogotá. The quake, which was felt as far away as Venezuela, Ecuador, and Panama, has destroyed over 1,600 homes and damaged thousands more . Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella has declared a national emergency, assuring affected citizens, “You are not alone. Colombia has a president who cares about the people and who will do everything in his power to help them in the most difficult moments.” Rescue crews continue to search through the rubble, with reports that 4,000 people remain unaccounted for, while communications are cut across much of the region, making the full scale of the tragedy still emerging.

In response, Christian organizations are rapidly mobilizing relief efforts to bring aid and hope to the devastated region. Samaritan’s Purse is airlifting more than 48 tons of essential supplies—including hygiene kits, solar lights, and shelter materials—to the impacted areas, with teams working in partnership with local churches to distribute aid in Jesus’ Name . Send Relief, in coordination with Southern Baptist churches and International Mission Board teams, is deploying a Disaster Assistance Response Team to the hardest-hit cities of Cali and Pereira to support local congregations already on the ground . Operation Blessing and Catholic organizations like Aid to the Church in Need and Cafod are also providing emergency shelter, clean water, and food, while the Evangelical Confederation of Colombia (CEDECOL) is assessing the damage to its affiliated churches and members .
