A Newcastle vicar has taken his ministry to unprecedented heights—quite literally—by completing a charity skydive from 14,000 feet and delivering a holy blessing mid-freefall. Rev. Gerard Rundell, a vicar at St Aidan’s Church in Brunton Park, Gosforth, fulfilled a long-held dream while raising over £2,500 for the church’s Family and Children’s Worker Fund. The dramatic stunt saw Rundell plunge through the sky for a “surreal” 50 seconds, during which his instructor asked him to bless the cameraman. “It was a wonderful experience and not something I was expecting,” Rundell told Chronicle Live, describing the breathtaking view from above the clouds, where he could look out to the sea and the Durham landscape.
The skydive has been met with overwhelming support from the community, with Rundell expressing his gratitude for the generosity shown. “Everyone has been incredibly generous,” he said. “We are delighted at the amount of money this has raised, which will make a difference to how we support children, young people and families in our community.” The funds will directly benefit the church’s mission to serve families and young people, ensuring that Rundell’s leap of faith translates into tangible blessings on the ground.
