A decade after the original animated classic captivated audiences worldwide, the live-action Moana has sailed into theaters, bringing with it the same beloved plot, characters, and heart. Starring Catherine Laga’aia as the fearless Polynesian princess and Dwayne Johnson reprising his role as the demigod Maui, the PG-rated Disney musical follows Moana as she ventures beyond the reef to save her dying island by returning the stolen heart of the goddess Te Fiti. The Worldview Concerns Persist
However, beneath the dazzling visuals and infectious melodies lie spiritual themes that Christian parents should thoughtfully consider. The film draws heavily from Polynesian mythology, presenting an alternative creation account (“In the beginning, there was only ocean”), an animistic worldview where the ocean possesses consciousness and obeys Moana, and a polytheistic realm populated by demigods, goddesses, and supernatural beings. The depiction of Grandma Tala’s reincarnation into a sea creature who communicates with Moana after death offers a view of the afterlife that directly contradicts biblical teaching. Additionally, the live-action format makes the traditional Polynesian clothing more noticeable, and the demon creature scenes are more intense than in the animation. While these elements don’t make the film off-limits, they provide parents with a valuable opportunity to discuss the differences between mythological storytelling and the truth of Scripture.
A Conversation Starter, Not a Cancellation
For Christian families, Moana is not a film to avoid but a film to engage with intentionally.
