Bloodied Weekend in Chicago Fuels Trump’s Call for Federal Intervention as Death Toll Rises to 6

A violent and deadly weekend in Chicago has thrust the city’s ongoing battle with gun violence back into the national spotlight, with at least six people killed and 39 others shot across a series of incidents—including a mass drive-by shooting during a Juneteenth gathering that left 13 injured. The bloodshed has drawn a sharp response from President Donald Trump, who took to Truth Social to question why Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has not requested federal assistance. “Lots of Killing going on in Chicago. 22 people shot, at least 4 Dead. Why isn’t Governor Pritzker calling me for help,” Trump wrote, pointing to his administration’s success in reducing crime in Washington, D.C., through National Guard deployment. “I could make Chicago a safe City in ONE MONTH, in ONE YEAR, it would be one of the safest!!!” he added, as the weekend toll continued to climb.

The violence began Friday night when an SUV pulled up to a crowd in the Princeton Park neighborhood, and two suspects opened fire—an act that Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson described as “heartbreaking,” noting that “what should have been a night of celebration and community reflection for Juneteenth was shattered by a horrific act of violence.” Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche also weighed in, slamming Governor Pritzker for allegedly refusing federal help and contrasting Chicago’s escalating violence with successful crime reduction efforts in D.C. and Memphis. “The critical need for local and federal cooperation to stop the violence,” Blanche emphasized, as Chicago police continue to investigate the shootings. The weekend’s grim statistics serve as a stark reminder that, for all the political debate, the human cost of inaction is measured in lives lost and families forever changed.
