JD Vance Lands in Switzerland as Trump Team Pushes for Breakthrough in High-Stakes Iran Negotiations

Vice President JD Vance has arrived in Switzerland to join White House envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff for a critical new round of negotiations with Iran . The talks, taking place at the Bürgenstock resort, aim to establish a lasting framework following the recent 60-day ceasefire and memorandum of understanding (MOU) signed by President Trump and Iran’s leadership after the G7 summit . Vance, who arrived early Sunday morning, said he expects to stay for just “a day or two” to help set up the structure of the negotiations, leaving the detailed technical work to the team on the ground.

Before departing, Vance outlined the primary US objectives: making progress on curbing Iran’s nuclear program and securing a ceasefire in Lebanon . He noted that while headlines suggest instability, the situation in Lebanon is “actually getting better” despite ongoing clashes between Israel and Hezbollah, and that the goal is to “stop the shooting for long enough to get the ceasefire to hold” . The Iranian delegation, led by Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, is also present, with Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Field Marshal Syed Asim Munir participating as mediators.

The negotiations come as President Trump has warned that the US could impose tolls in the Strait of Hormuz if a lasting agreement is not reached before the ceasefire expires.
