“Treacherous Betrayal or Sinking Morale?” – Former Thatcher Advisor Backs Trump’s Fury at Europe’s Iran Stance

In a scathing assessment that has reignited transatlantic tensions, Nile Gardiner—a former advisor to Margaret Thatcher—has declared that President Trump is “right to be outraged” by what he calls Europe’s “treacherous” lack of support during the recent war with Iran. Speaking to Fox News Digital, Gardiner accused key European allies, particularly Germany, Spain, and Italy, of abandoning both the United States and the cause of Western security. He singled out German Chancellor Friedrich Merz for suggesting Iran had “humiliated” Trump, calling such comments “disgusting” and alleging they provided comfort to the Iranian regime. Spain, Gardiner argued, has been “the worst by a long way,” having refused to allow U.S. military bases on its soil to support operations against Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Italy, too, drew Trump’s ire, with the president admitting he was “shocked” at Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s perceived lack of courage.

Gardiner’s critique goes beyond wartime tactics, framing Europe’s response as evidence of a deeper moral and strategic decay. He argues that much of Western Europe has embraced “appeasement, weakness, and pacifism” toward the Iranian regime—a “genocidal” threat that has vowed to wipe Israel off the map. In contrast, he contends, the United States remains willing “to fight to defend Western civilization.” The crisis, he warns, has exposed a continent that has “lost both its ability and its will to fight,” overwhelmed by mass migration, Islamification, and a defeatist elite. While Trump has backed his words with action—announcing troop withdrawals from Germany and threatening similar moves in Spain and Italy—Gardiner concludes that Europe’s leaders are “sleepwalking toward destruction.” The episode, he says, will leave future generations to pay the price for a continent that has surrendered its moral compass.
