Trump Cold on New Iranian Proposal as Officials Say Offer ‘Doesn’t Love’ Back

President Donald Trump is reportedly unimpressed with the latest Iranian proposal delivered via Pakistani mediators on Monday, with a U.S. official telling Reuters that the offer falls short of addressing the core issue at the heart of escalating tensions: Iran’s nuclear program. “He doesn’t love the proposal,” the official said, summarizing the president’s reaction to Tehran’s second written overture. The lukewarm response came following a Situation Room meeting convened by Trump with key members of his administration on Monday to discuss the ongoing conflict with Iran, according to ABC News. Despite the setback, Reuters reports that efforts to bridge the significant gaps between Washington and Tehran have not stopped, though the current proposal appears to have done little to ease hostilities.

The diplomatic stalemate unfolded alongside a heated session at the United Nations Security Council, where Russia’s ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia, rose sharply to Iran’s defense. Nebenzia accused Western nations of hypocrisy and compared them to pirates, arguing that Iran, as a coastal state under attack, has every right to restrict navigation in the Strait of Hormuz for security purposes. “Unlike pirates who raise their black flags with a skull and crossbones on their vessels, Western countries are attempting to conceal their lawless actions with references to unilateral coercive measures,” Nebenzia said, calling Europe’s posture “a fig leaf” for “blatant robbery at sea.” His remarks came just weeks after Russia and China vetoed a Security Council draft resolution aimed at securing freedom of navigation in the strategic waterway. With Trump rejecting the latest diplomatic offering and tensions escalating both militarily and rhetorically, the path to de-escalation remains deeply uncertain.
