In a devastating turn of events that has shaken the Owensboro community, former worship pastor David A. Rodgers died by apparent suicide on Thursday morning, just three days after his arrest on multiple charges related to the sexual abuse of a minor . The 40-year-old former worship pastor at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church was found deceased near his Utica residence around 9:45 a.m. from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Daviess County Sheriff’s Office . Rodgers had been arrested on February 16th following an investigation that began in early January, with allegations dating back approximately a decade involving a victim who was between 12 and 13 years old when the relationship began . He faced grave charges including third-degree rape, second-degree sodomy involving a position of authority, first-degree sexual abuse, and possession of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor under age 12.

The circumstances surrounding Rodgers’ release on bond have raised troubling questions about jail protocols and mental health assessments. Despite being placed on suicide watch at the Daviess County Detention Center after triaging as “high risk due to the nature of the charges,” Rodgers was released the following day after a family member posted his $75,000 full cash bond .
