Prayers for Peace: Sectarian Violence Erupts in Egypt’s Minya Province Over Interfaith Rumours

188views

Christian leaders are calling for urgent prayers after sectarian violence broke out in Egypt’s Minya Province, following online rumours that a young Christian man was romantically involved with a Muslim girl. According to Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), inflammatory posts and hate speech on social media quickly stirred anger, prompting crowds from the Muslim community to gather outside Christian homes in the village of Nazlat Jalf, Beni Mazar. Witnesses reported stones and incendiary devices being thrown at Christian properties before police intervened and made several arrests. Authorities are now organising a reconciliation session to ease tensions and restore calm in the region.

Sectarian clashes remain a recurring challenge in Upper Egypt, where reconciliation meetings often replace formal legal proceedings—leaving victims without justice. CSW Chief Executive Scot Bower condemned the attack, describing it as “an assault on innocent people and on the fundamental rights and human dignity that should be enjoyed by every citizen.” While commending the police for their swift response, Bower urged the Egyptian government to address the deeper issues fuelling such violence: hate speech, religious discrimination, and collective punishment. “True peace,” he said, “can only be achieved when the rule of law protects every citizen equally, regardless of faith.”
