237views

In a heart-wrenching display of selflessness, Anderson “Chase” Childers, a 38-year-old father of three and former police officer, lost his life while rescuing a family of five caught in a deadly riptide off the South Carolina coast. Childers, who was on vacation with his wife and children at Pawleys Island, sprang into action without hesitation, swimming out to help the struggling swimmers. Despite the danger, he worked with another individual to rescue all five victims, but the powerful current proved too strong for him, and he tragically drowned in the effort.

The Pawleys Island Police Department praised Childers’ bravery, saying he “died trying to save others.” Chief of Police Michael Fanning described the scene, noting that Childers seemed to have seen or heard something beyond the initial distress and went out to help, ultimately becoming a victim himself. Childers’ background as a former police officer and professional baseball player made his heroic actions all the more poignant. He had previously received a lifetime achievement award for saving lives during his time as an officer with the Cobb County Police Department. His selfless act has left his family, friends, and the community in shock and grief.

A GoFundMe page set up for Childers’ wife, Nataley, and their three young children has raised over $100,000, a testament to the outpouring of love and support for the family. Childers’ mother, Nancy, paid tribute to her son, describing him as a hero who “drowned a hero.” The family has been overwhelmed by the response, but they are struggling to come to terms with the loss of their beloved husband and father. As the community mourns the loss of this extraordinary man, Childers’ bravery and sacrifice will be remembered for years to come.
