New Bishop of Crediton Installed with Pomp and Circumstance

The Right Revd Moira Astin has been officially welcomed as the new Bishop of Crediton in a Service of Installation at Exeter Cathedral. The ceremony, steeped in tradition, saw Bishop Moira formally placed in her stall in the cathedral’s quire, marking the beginning of her tenure. Fellow bishops, archdeacons, and clergy from across Devon attended the service, which included Bishop Moira’s inaugural sermon. Her sermon drew on the story of Moses and the burning bush, and John 17:20-26, highlighting the importance of names and God’s essence as relationship and love.

A Personal Touch

Bishop Moira’s bishop’s mitre, embroidered with coastal scenes and a flying puffin, reflected her love for seabirds and the Devonshire coast. The design also incorporated choral notes, symbolizing her passion for music. During the ceremony, two young people presented Bishop Moira with prayers written for her new ministry. She was then invited to make vows to guide the diocese in its vision: growing in prayer, making new disciples, and serving the people of Devon with joy. Following the service, Bishop Moira was welcomed into the College of Canons of Exeter Cathedral and presented with a cake decorated with a puffin.
