In a heartwarming display of interfaith cooperation, St. Luke United Methodist Church in Bryn Mawr, Philadelphia, has opened its doors to the As-Salaam Islamic Society, sharing its worship space and fostering a sense of community. The Islamic Society now uses the fellowship hall for Friday prayers, Sunday school classes, and community events, creating a welcoming environment for Muslims to practice their faith.

Church opens doors to Muslim community for weekly prayers

The partnership, led by Rev Mark Salvacion, pastor at St. Luke’s, has blossomed into a meaningful relationship, with both communities coming together for service projects, shared meals during Ramadan, and even co-leading a Bible and Quran study session. Ahmad Abdel-Hamid, president of the Islamic Society, expressed gratitude for the warm welcome, saying, “We feel loved here, and that helps make this a good place to celebrate our faith and to teach our children.” This collaboration embodies the true spirit of community and mutual respect.

The arrangement not only addresses a practical need for the Muslim community, which lost its nearby mosque in 2018, but also reflects the United Methodist Church’s commitment to building “more hospitable and cooperative relationships” with Muslim neighbors. Despite some backlash, Rev Salvacion remains committed to his mission, emphasizing the importance of caring for one another, especially the poor and needy. This inspiring example of interfaith unity serves as a beacon of hope for communities worldwide.
