A potentially devastating mass shooting was averted at CrossPointe Community Church in Wayne, Michigan, thanks to the swift actions of a deacon and a security guard. On Sunday, during the church’s annual Vacation Bible School service, a 31-year-old gunman wearing a tactical vest and armed with an AR-15 rifle and semi-automatic handgun approached the church. However, before he could enter the building where approximately 150 visitors and members, including many children, were gathered, he wasC run over by a deacon in a vehicle and subsequently shot and killed by the security guard.

The security guard sustained a gunshot wound to the leg but is in stable condition at a local hospital. According to Wayne Police Chief Ryan Strong, the heroic actions of the church’s staff members undoubtedly saved many lives and prevented a large-scale mass shooting. The gunman, identified as Brian Anthony Browning, fired several shots into the church but fortunately, no one inside was injured. Browning’s motives are still unclear, but police suggest he may have been experiencing a mental health crisis. Interestingly, Browning’s mother attends the church, and he had occasionally attended services over the past year.
CrossPointe Community Church Senior Pastor Bobby Kelly Jr. credited the church’s security team, established a decade ago following other acts of violence against churches, for their quick response. “We are sitting ducks to someone who wants to come and do harm,” Kelly said, highlighting the importance of vigilance. The church’s security team reacted swiftly to the gunfire, locking the front doors and engaging the suspect outside. Thanks to their bravery, a potentially catastrophic event was prevented, and the congregation was protected.
