Iran’s Defiant Stance: Nuclear Enrichment Will Continue Regardless of US Deal

Iran’s Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi has made it clear that the country will continue to enrich uranium, regardless of whether a nuclear deal is reached with the United States. In a statement on X, Araghchi emphasized Iran’s rights as a member of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, saying, “There is no scenario in which Iranians will permit deviance from that.” This stance comes after President Donald Trump announced that the US had given Iran a proposal for a nuclear deal, warning that Iranian officials need to move quickly or “something bad is going to happen”.

Mastering Enrichment Technology
Araghchi highlighted Iran’s scientific achievements in mastering enrichment technology, describing it as a “hard-earned and homegrown scientific achievement; an outcome of great sacrifice of both blood and treasure”. He reiterated that if the US is genuinely interested in ensuring Iran doesn’t develop nuclear weapons, a deal is within reach, and Iran is ready for serious conversations. However, enrichment will continue with or without a deal, Araghchi emphasized.

Concerns Over Iran’s Nuclear Capabilities
The International Atomic Energy Agency has raised concerns over Iran’s growing stockpile of 60% enriched uranium, which has alarmingly increased from 182 kg to 275 kg in early 2025. Senator Marco Rubio warned that Iran is “at the threshold of a nuclear weapon”, stating that if they decide to do so, they could quickly develop a nuclear weapon. Rubio’s concerns underscore the urgency of the situation and the need for a comprehensive agreement.

Ongoing Talks and Next Steps
US and Iranian officials have held four rounds of talks, primarily in Oman, to address Tehran’s nuclear program. While President Trump mentioned that the two countries have “sort of” agreed to terms on a nuclear deal, the details remain unclear. As tensions continue to simmer, the international community watches closely, hoping for a peaceful resolution to the standoff. With Iran’s defiant stance and the US’s push for a deal, the outcome remains uncertain.
