U.S. Representative Mike Johnson secured re-election as Speaker of the House on Friday, winning 218-215 in a tightly contested vote. Johnson, who originally claimed the gavel in 2023 after weeks of GOP deadlock, won Friday’s vote on the first ballot. Crucial support came from Reps. Keith Self (Texas) and Ralph Norman (S.C.), who switched their votes, ensuring Johnson’s win.

Addressing the House, Johnson called the moment “the great honor of my life,” pledging to steward America’s legacy as the nation approaches the 250th anniversary of the Revolution. He emphasized advancing Trump’s “America First” agenda, promising fiscal reforms, accountability for federal bureaucracy, and a streamlined government.

Trump praised Johnson before the vote, calling him “a fine man of great ability” on Truth Social. Johnson, first elected to Congress in 2016, is the shortest-tenured representative to become Speaker in over 140 years. A devout Christian, he remains deeply connected to his Louisiana roots and his faith community at Cypress Baptist Church.

As Speaker, Johnson faces a challenging path to unite a sharply divided House and deliver on Republican priorities over the next two years.
