Countdown to Eternity: Are You Ready for the End of Days?

Imagine this: The world as you know it is ending today. What would you do? How would you spend your last moments on earth? Would you be ready to stand before your Creator, or would fear and regret overwhelm you? These are not mere hypothetical questions—they are a sobering wake-up call for every believer. Our world is hurtling towards a climactic end, and the signs of the times are all around us. Yet, many continue to live as if life will go on forever, ignoring the clear warnings from Scripture and the prophetic voices of our time.

The Sad State of Our World Today

In our everyday lives, we face challenges that reflect the deep brokenness of our world. Wars rage on without end, natural disasters strike with increasing frequency, political corruption festers unchecked, and moral decay spreads like a wildfire. The Apostle Paul’s words to Timothy are alarmingly relevant today:

“But understand this, that in the last days there will come times of difficulty. For people will be lovers of self, lovers of money, proud, arrogant, abusive, disobedient to their parents, ungrateful, unholy, heartless, unappeasable, slanderous, without self-control, brutal, not loving good, treacherous, reckless, swollen with conceit, lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God” (2 Timothy 3:1-4, ESV).

Does this not sound like the world we live in today?

Our world is drowning in sin, and the clock is ticking. Jesus warned us, “But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only” (Matthew 24:36, ESV). Yet, He also commanded us to be prepared: “Therefore you also must be ready, for the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not expect” (Matthew 24:44, ESV).

The Urgency of Preparation

The urgency of Jesus’ words should stir our souls and prompt deep reflection: Are we truly prepared? Too often, we become entangled in the busyness of life—work, relationships, entertainment, and the pursuit of success. We plan for tomorrow, next year, and even decades ahead, but how often do we consider the state of our souls? Jesus issued a profound challenge:

“For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul?” (Matthew 16:26, ESV).

The treasures of this world are fleeting, but our eternal destiny is not. The Bible repeatedly warns about the end of days, and yet many live as if they are immune to the judgment that is to come.

The Prophetic Warnings

The prophets have spoken, the Scriptures have declared it, and the signs are evident. Jesus described these times as the “beginning of birth pains” (Matthew 24:8, ESV)—a time of great distress that precedes His return. As birth pains intensify, so too will the trials we face. These are not meant to destroy us but to awaken us to the reality that this world is passing away, and only what is done for Christ will last.

The Book of Revelation provides a glimpse of what is to come:

“Then I saw a new heaven and a new earth, for the first heaven and the first earth had passed away, and the sea was no more” (Revelation 21:1, ESV).

This is the hope we cling to, but it also serves as a stark reminder that this current world, with all its allure, is temporary. As the prophet Isaiah declared: “The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever” (Isaiah 40:8, ESV).

A Call to Action

So, what should we do if the world were ending today? We must repent and turn back to God with all our hearts. We must seek His will above our own, surrendering our lives to His purpose. The Apostle Peter urges us:

“But the day of the Lord will come like a thief, and then the heavens will pass away with a roar, and the heavenly bodies will be burned up and dissolved, and the earth and the works that are done on it will be exposed. Since all these things are thus to be dissolved, what sort of people ought you to be in lives of holiness and godliness, waiting for and hastening the coming of the day of God” (2 Peter 3:10-12, ESV).

For those who doubt, consider this: The world is not spiraling out of control; it is moving toward a divine climax. The return of Christ is not a possibility—it is a certainty. When He comes, He will separate the sheep from the goats, the wheat from the tares. There will be no more time for second chances.

The Time Is Now

Beloved, the time to prepare is now. Examine your heart, your priorities, your faith. Are you ready to meet your Maker? Are you living for the eternal, or are you consumed by the temporary? Jesus is calling:

“Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me” (Revelation 3:20, ESV).

Will you answer His call, or will you be found unprepared when the world as we know it comes to an end?

The choice is yours, but remember: “The night is far gone; the day is at hand” (Romans 13:12, ESV). Let us live as if today is our last, with hearts fully surrendered to Christ, ready to stand before Him with confidence, knowing that we have been faithful to His call. The world may be ending, but for those in Christ, the best is yet to come.
