“I Have the Power of Veto”: Trump Warns Democrats He’ll Block Their Agenda as GOP Faces Midterm Losses

18views

President Donald Trump stressed on Tuesday that he plans to use the “power of veto” to block Democrat-backed legislation, as the party is expected to take control of the House and Senate. “It’s one of the stronger powers that a president has,” he told Fox News’ Bret Baier. “And they’ll send over things that are insane and I’ll veto them. And after a couple of months of vetoes, they’ll go out and they’ll say, how do we get this stuff done? And we’ll work together.” Trump added, “You know, I have a lot of friends that are Democrats, believe it or not, I’ve already spoken to some of them. I’ve had four calls from meaningful Democrats—two senators and three congressmen, actually. So it’s a total of five, and they have three waiting to call me. So I don’t know, they obviously want to talk, but I have the power of veto. And the power of veto is, you know, it’s impervious.”

The president’s remarks came as Democrats celebrated a major victory in South Texas, where Tejano music star Bobby Pulido defeated Republican Rep. Monica De La Cruz in Texas’ 15th Congressional District, flipping a GOP-held seat. The Latin Grammy-winning musician, making his first run for public office, overcame a Republican incumbent who helped usher in a political realignment in the historically Democratic Rio Grande Valley. De La Cruz first won the seat in 2022, becoming the first Republican elected to represent the district, and secured reelection in 2024 as President Donald Trump carried the area by approximately 18 percentage points. Pulido’s victory marks a reversal for Republicans in a region where the party has made significant inroads among Hispanic voters in recent election cycles. The Democrat campaigned as a moderate, drawing on his decades-long music career and deep cultural ties to South Texas to appeal to voters across party lines. The result gives Democrats a Republican-held seat in their push to secure control of the House and raises questions about the durability of the GOP’s coalition among South Texas Latino voters. With Democrats poised to take control of Congress, Trump’s veto power may become the central battleground of the next two years, as the president prepares to block what he calls “insane” legislation while insisting he remains open to working with Democrats who are willing to engage.
